The Mining Marshals of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have arrested a senior police officer over his alleged involvement in aiding the escape of Chinese nationals being prosecuted for illegal mining activities.

The arrest marks a fresh twist in the ongoing crackdown on illegal mining operations across the country and highlights growing tensions between security agencies over the enforcement of mining regulations.

According to sources within the NSCDC, the officer is accused of interfering with an ongoing investigation and facilitating the escape of foreign suspects who were previously arrested for alleged involvement in illegal mining activities.

The Chinese nationals were among several suspects facing prosecution over alleged illegal extraction of mineral resources, particularly lithium, in parts of Nasarawa State. The suspects had been arrested during enforcement operations conducted by the NSCDC Mining Marshals as part of efforts to curb illegal mining and protect Nigeria's solid mineral assets.

The Commander of the NSCDC Mining Marshals, Assistant Commandant General John Onoja, has repeatedly raised concerns over attempts by certain individuals and groups to obstruct the agency's efforts to tackle illegal mining and ensure offenders face justice.

While details surrounding the arrest remain sketchy, the NSCDC has reportedly commenced a full investigation into the circumstances that led to the alleged escape of the suspects and the officer's purported role in the incident.

The Nigeria Police Force is yet to issue an official statement regarding the arrest or the allegations against the senior officer.

The development comes amid intensified government efforts to combat illegal mining, which authorities say continues to deprive Nigeria of substantial revenue while posing serious environmental and security challenges.

Security analysts believe the outcome of the investigation could have far-reaching implications for inter-agency cooperation in the fight against illegal mining and the protection of Nigeria's mineral resources.
