The Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has raised concerns over what he described as credible reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is planning to freeze the bank accounts of the Osun State Government ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
The governor, in a statement issued on Tuesday evening in Osogbo through the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi, alleged that the anti-graft agency has concluded plans to freeze all accounts belonging to the state government.
According to the statement, the EFCC is also allegedly preparing to freeze the personal accounts of top government officials in the state.
Governor Adeleke described the reported move as "the height of lawlessness," warning that such an action, if carried out, would cripple government operations and disrupt the delivery of essential public services just days before the governorship election.
He alleged that the planned action is intended to paralyse the administration and undermine governance ahead of the poll.
The governor further maintained that there is no legal justification for freezing the accounts of a state government, insisting that the EFCC lacks the constitutional authority to take such action.
As of the time of filing this report, the EFCC had not issued any official response to the allegations made by the Osun State Government.
The statement was signed by the Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Oluomo Kolapo Alimi.
