The Federal Government has declared Tuesday, August 25, 2026, a public holiday to commemorate this year’s Eid-ul-Mawlid, marking the birth of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (Peace Be Upon Him).


The declaration was announced by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the Federal Government in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior, Dr Magdalene Ajani, on Friday, August 21.


The Federal Government congratulated Muslims in Nigeria and across the diaspora on the occasion and urged citizens to reflect on the values associated with the life and teachings of Prophet Muhammad, particularly compassion, humility, service to others and peaceful coexistence.


Tunji-Ojo also called on Nigerians to use the occasion to pray for peace, unity and national cohesion, stressing that maintaining national unity remains a collective responsibility.


The minister urged citizens to celebrate the religious occasion with restraint and mutual respect, while wishing the Muslim community a peaceful and joyous Eid-ul-Mawlid celebration.


He further reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring the sustenance of peace across the country.


The declaration means Tuesday, August 25, will be observed as a work-free day nationwide in honour of Eid-ul-Mawlid.
