Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on Monday took activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, Omoyele Sowore, into custody at the premises of the Federal High Court in Abuja following a court order remanding him in the Kuje Correctional Centre.
The development came shortly after Justice Mohammed Umar ordered Sowore's remand pending the hearing of an application challenging the revocation of his bail.
Eyewitnesses said security operatives escorted the activist out of the courtroom after the ruling, leading to a brief commotion involving some of his supporters and members of the security team.
Earlier during the proceedings, the court dismissed an application in which Sowore sought the judge's recusal from the case over allegations of bias. The court subsequently ordered that he be remanded pending the determination of a motion seeking a stay of execution of the bail revocation order and the bench warrant previously issued against him.
Justice Umar adjourned the matter until June 24, 2026, for the hearing of the pending application.
Sowore is facing prosecution over allegations linked to comments he made on social media concerning President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. The case has continued to generate widespread public interest, attracting supporters and observers to the court proceedings.
The latest development marks another chapter in the ongoing legal battle involving the activist, whose supporters have repeatedly raised concerns about his treatment by security agencies, while government authorities maintain that due legal processes are being followed.
