A young man identified as Abiodun Saburi Kabiru was reportedly killed on Monday evening in Ikire, Irewole Local Government Area of Osun State, in an incident that has heightened concerns over political violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.
According to reports, the incident occurred near the YOMMYRITE Restaurant area, close to the Irewole Local Government Secretariat. Eyewitness accounts cited by local sources alleged that Kabiru and a companion were riding on a motorcycle when they encountered a group of individuals suspected to be political thugs.
Witnesses claimed that the deceased was pursued from the scene through the expressway and the Local Government Secretariat area before being shot near a residence close to the Secretariat. He was reportedly pronounced dead at the scene.
Sources further alleged that officers from the Ikire Divisional Police Headquarters later recovered the body and deposited it at Oluyoro Hospital in Apomu.
As of the time of reporting, the Osun State Police Command had not officially confirmed the incident. Efforts by journalists to obtain comments from the police spokesperson were reportedly unsuccessful.
The incident comes amid increasing political tension in Osun State as parties intensify campaigns ahead of the forthcoming governorship election.
Recently, Governor Ademola Adeleke raised concerns over alleged political violence in the state and called for strict enforcement of the law against individuals found culpable, regardless of political affiliation. The governor also urged security agencies to identify and prosecute both perpetrators and sponsors of violent attacks.
The reported killing has sparked concerns among residents, with many calling for a thorough investigation and strengthened security measures to prevent further violence during the election period.
