Veteran Nollywood actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo, has died at the age of 66 after battling cancer.

The renowned Yoruba actor reportedly died on Sunday, August 23, 2026, following a battle with the illness that had recently become public. His death was reported by multiple Nigerian media organisations, with TVC News and Vanguard among those confirming the development.

The development comes only days after Ogogo’s family publicly sought urgent medical assistance for the actor after revealing that he was battling advanced-stage cancer.

His daughters, Kira and Lima Taiwo, had earlier appealed to medical professionals, hospitals and well-wishers for assistance as the family explored treatment options for the veteran actor.

Ogogo’s health crisis generated widespread concern across the Nigerian entertainment industry, with several colleagues and fans rallying around him with prayers and support.

The actor’s death is particularly significant to the Yoruba film industry, where he established himself as one of its most recognisable figures over a career spanning several decades.

Born Taiwo Hassan on October 31, 1959, in Ilaro, Ogun State, Ogogo built a celebrated career as an actor, producer and director. He became widely recognised for his performances in Yoruba-language films and his contribution to the growth of indigenous Nigerian cinema.

His passing comes less than a week after his family had to debunk an earlier social-media claim that he had died. On August 18, his daughter, Lima, described that report as fake and urged the public to stop circulating unverified information.

However, fresh reports on Sunday confirmed the veteran actor’s death, bringing to an end a career that made him one of the enduring names in Yoruba Nollywood.

Ogogo’s death is expected to trigger an outpouring of tributes from actors, filmmakers, colleagues and admirers across Nigeria and beyond.
