The University of Ibadan (UI) and its Students’ Union Government (SUG) have confirmed the abduction of a 300-level female Law student, identified simply as Tomisin, who was kidnapped alongside seven other individuals while returning from a religious conference in Imo State.
The institution clarified reports circulating on social media alleging that eight students of the university were abducted, stressing that Tomisin is the only University of Ibadan student involved in the incident.
According to information released by the university and the students’ union, Tomisin is the National Secretary of the Scripture Union Student Fellowship, Nigeria, and also serves as the Vice-President of the fellowship’s University of Ibadan chapter.
She was reportedly returning from the fellowship’s National Conference held at the SU Camp of Faith in Okigwe, Imo State, when the incident occurred.
Reports indicate that communication was lost with the convoy conveying the fellowship’s National General Director, Engr. Uwem Cosmos, in which Tomisin was travelling. Concerns over her whereabouts intensified after she failed to appear for scheduled faculty examinations at the university.
Confirming the development, the University of Ibadan’s Director of Public Relations, Mrs. Joke Akinpelu, said the institution became aware of the situation after the student was declared missing. She noted that Tomisin travelled for the programme without officially notifying the university.
Akinpelu disclosed that the Dean of Students and other relevant university authorities have since engaged security agencies to facilitate efforts aimed at securing the student's safe release.
Similarly, the Students’ Union Government reassured students and members of the university community that necessary interventions are underway. SUG President, Comrade Temidayo Adeboye, urged students to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information while authorities continue rescue efforts.
The abduction has generated widespread concern within the university community, with students, staff, and well-wishers expressing hope for the safe return of Tomisin and the other victims.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had not released official details regarding the circumstances surrounding the abduction or progress made in rescue operations.
