The management of Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has rejected a request by the Nigerian Army to disclose the identities of students who allegedly suffered sexual assault during an attack reportedly carried out by military recruits in Osogbo.

The university described the demand as inappropriate, insisting that revealing the identities of the victims could expose them to further trauma, intimidation and stigma.

UNIOSUN maintained that protecting the privacy and dignity of the affected students remains its priority, stressing that it would not release their identities outside the due process of the law. The institution said it is prepared to pursue legal action to ensure justice for the victims while safeguarding their rights.

The development follows allegations that some military recruits attacked students residing in private hostels near the university, with reports of physical assault, theft and sexual abuse. The university's Vice-Chancellor had earlier called for the prosecution and summary dismissal of the personnel involved, describing their actions as unacceptable and inconsistent with the values of the Nigerian Army. Authorities also confirmed that some of the suspected recruits had been arrested as investigations continue.

UNIOSUN reiterated its commitment to supporting the affected students and ensuring that all those responsible are held accountable through lawful means. The institution urged relevant authorities to conduct a transparent investigation and deliver justice without compromising the safety or confidentiality of the victims.
