President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved a major salary increase for personnel of the Nigerian Armed Forces, with pay rises ranging from 30 to 80 percent across various ranks in a move aimed at improving troop welfare and strengthening national security.

The new salary structure, announced in a statement on Tuesday by the President's Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, will take effect from September 1, 2026, and is expected to benefit about 250,000 military personnel.

According to the breakdown, officers above the rank of Colonel, including Brigadier Generals, Major Generals, Lieutenant Generals and Generals, will receive a 30 percent salary increase.

Personnel from the rank of Colonel down to Warrant Officer will enjoy a 50 percent increase, while soldiers from Private to Staff Sergeant will receive the highest adjustment of 80 percent.

The Federal Government said the new pay package will raise the annual wage bill for the armed forces from ₦660 billion to ₦924 billion, reflecting the administration's commitment to enhancing the welfare of military personnel.

President Tinubu said the salary review is in recognition of the sacrifices made by members of the armed forces in combating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other security challenges across the country.

He reaffirmed his administration's commitment to improving troop welfare and modernising the military through the provision of advanced weapons, equipment and technological tools needed to effectively carry out their constitutional responsibilities.

The President also stressed that security remains a critical pillar of national development, pledging continued support for the armed forces and other security agencies in their efforts to safeguard lives and property.

Tinubu urged military personnel to see the salary increase as a demonstration of the government's appreciation for their patriotism and dedication, expressing confidence that Nigeria would overcome those threatening the nation's peace and stability.
