ABUJA — The Nigeria Police Force has launched an internal administrative investigation into the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 2 Command, Moshood Jimoh, following public corruption and misconduct allegations made by social media activist Martins Vincent Otse, popularly known as VeryDarkMan (VDM).
The Force Headquarters also confirmed that it has formally invited VDM to appear before the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) in Abuja to provide evidence supporting his public claims.
Background on the Controversy
The tension stems from high-profile social media commentary and videos released by VDM regarding a controversial double murder investigation in Lagos State. The case involves the killings of youth leader Sheriff Salami in April 2023 and Ademola Akinloye, the son of an Ajiran traditional ruler, in August 2024.
Following police investigations—overseen at the time by AIG Jimoh when he served as the Lagos State Commissioner of Police—a businessman named Hammed Akanbi was declared wanted, arrested by INTERPOL in the Benin Republic, and extradited to Nigeria to face trial.
VDM publicly challenged the integrity of the investigation, alleging that investigators manipulated evidence, wrongly implicated Mr. Akanbi, and mishandled the case. In response, AIG Jimoh strongly denied any wrongdoing, maintaining that his record is clean and that due process was strictly followed.
Force Headquarters Reaction
In a statement issued on Tuesday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Assistant Commissioner of Police Ani Iniedu, the police command stressed that the underlying criminal matter is already sub judice—having been thoroughly investigated and forwarded to a court of competent jurisdiction based on legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).
"The Force will not try this case in the media, nor will it allow its outcome to be shaped by public campaigns or commentary seeking to prejudge the officers or parties involved," the statement read.
Despite the judicial status of the court case, the police leadership emphasized that internal accountability mechanisms require a parallel review of the professional conduct of the officers involved.
Next Steps
- AIG Questioning: The FCID has summoned AIG Moshood Jimoh for an internal administrative review regarding the allegations.
- Action Against VDM: VDM was formally served a letter of invitation on July 30, 2026, directing him to report to the FCID office in Abuja to substantiate his allegations with credible evidence.
The police leadership reiterated its commitment to transparency, noting that any personnel found culpable of misconduct after exhaustive investigation will face appropriate disciplinary measures, while warning against baseless trials conducted via social media.
