Police Neutralise Two Suspected Kidnappers in Gun Battle Along Akure–Owo Expressway

Operatives of the Ondo State Police Command have neutralised two suspected kidnappers during a gun duel in Ilu-Abo, along the Akure–Owo Expressway, in a major breakthrough in the command's ongoing fight against kidnapping and violent crime.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Wednesday, July 8, 2026, when a patrol team from the Federal Highway Patrol Unit, Ilu-Abo, responded to a distress call reporting the presence of armed men at Olaiya Block Industry, located beside Ilu-Abo High School.

According to a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the suspected kidnappers, numbering about seven and wearing face masks, allegedly stormed the premises and demanded to see the owner of the business.

Acting on credible intelligence, police operatives swiftly mobilised to the scene, where the suspects reportedly opened fire on the patrol team, leading to a fierce exchange of gunfire.

During the operation, two of the suspected kidnappers were shot dead, while other members of the gang escaped into nearby bushes with suspected gunshot wounds.

The police recovered a locally fabricated pistol, live cartridges, four mobile phones, several face masks, and two ATM cards believed to be linked to the suspects or their victims.

The bodies of the deceased suspects have been deposited at the State Specialist Hospital, Akure, while the case has been transferred to the Anti-Kidnapping Squad of the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation.

The Ondo State Police Command said efforts are ongoing to track down and arrest the fleeing suspects, who are believed to have sustained injuries during the gun battle.

The command urged residents, healthcare workers, and members of the public to report anyone seeking treatment for suspicious gunshot wounds or exhibiting unusual movements to the nearest police station.

Commissioner of Police Felix Ohagwu reaffirmed the command's commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes through intelligence-led policing and enhanced operational strategies.

The police also appreciated residents for their continued support and cooperation, stressing that timely and credible information from the public remains vital in the fight against criminality across the state.
