The Osun State Police Command has arrested three suspects in connection with an alleged assassination attempt on the Director-General of the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship campaign in Osun State, Hon. Oluwole Oke.
The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan, disclosed this during a press briefing on Thursday, stating that the arrests followed intelligence-led operations aimed at tackling cultism, political thuggery and other violent crimes across the state.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, after Oke and other APC members paid a courtesy visit to the Ajalaye of Ipetu-Ijesa, Oba Agunbiade Oke, before proceeding to a meeting with party members at the Ipetu-Ijesa Town Hall.
The Command alleged that shortly after the meeting, a group of suspected political thugs linked to the Eiye Confraternity, allegedly led by 24-year-old Olamilekan Oriyomi, blocked the convoy's exit route. Police said Oriyomi allegedly produced an English Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of live ammunition and attempted to point it at Oke before he was swiftly subdued by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), preventing the attack.
Police officers stationed at the venue immediately arrested Oriyomi and recovered the firearm and ammunition, while other suspects reportedly fled the scene.
The Command said sustained operations by its Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) led to the arrest of two additional suspects, Ayotunde Ikupolati Ojo, 44, and Fakinleye Femi, 31, on July 1, 2026, in Ipetu-Ijesa.
During interrogation, Oriyomi allegedly confessed that he obtained the pistol from one Busuyi Akinwole Ikupolati, also known as "Omo-Akin," who remains at large. Police further disclosed that the suspect made statements implicating some influential individuals, who are currently under investigation.
The Commissioner of Police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects and assured residents that anyone found culpable would be prosecuted in accordance with the law after investigations are concluded.
Gotan reaffirmed the Command's commitment to ensuring a peaceful atmosphere before, during and after the forthcoming governorship election, warning that security agencies would deal decisively with anyone involved in political violence or other criminal activities.
He also urged residents of Osun State to remain calm, obey the law and continue to provide credible information to security agencies to support ongoing efforts to maintain peace and public safety.
