The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a clean sweep in the Ebonyi State local government elections, winning all 13 chairmanship seats and 171 councillorship positions contested across the state.
The results were announced on Sunday by the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Patrick Enyi, who declared APC candidates winners in all 13 local government areas.
The election, held on Saturday, has further strengthened the APC’s dominance in Ebonyi, with the party securing victories across the state.
Among those elected is Osborn Umahi, son of the Minister of Works, David Umahi, who emerged as chairman-elect of Ohaozara Local Government Area.
Other declared winners include Peace Agwu in Ishielu, Paul Ituma in Ohaukwu, Friday Nwuhuo in Ezza North, Chinedu Mkpuma in Ezza South, Chidi Nwode in Ikwo, Timothy Nwachi in Afikpo North and Ikechukwu Ogbofia in Onicha.
Michael Anyim won in Ivo, Simeon Onuoha in Edda, Helen Aduga in Izzi, Chidiebere Alo in Abakaliki, while Chibueze Odigwe emerged victorious in Ebonyi Local Government Area.
PDP Rejects Results
The sweeping victory has, however, triggered a strong reaction from the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which rejected the election and questioned the credibility of the exercise.
The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Darlington Onwe, described the election as “not an election at all”, alleging that the process lacked the conditions required for a credible and competitive poll.
According to him, the party considered the exercise a “mono-party poll”, alleging that the state electoral commission and the Ebonyi State Government failed to provide a level playing field for participating political parties.
The PDP also alleged that the election was conducted despite subsisting court judgments, insisting that the outcome could not be regarded as a legitimate reflection of the will of the people.
EBSIEC Defends Election
EBSIEC, however, dismissed concerns over the conduct of the election, describing the exercise as peaceful, free and fair.
The commission commended voters, political actors and security agencies for their conduct during the poll and congratulated the newly elected council officials.
For the APC, the outcome represents a significant political victory and a demonstration of the party’s growing influence across Ebonyi.
The party’s state chairman, Stanley Okoro Emegha, hailed the result, saying it reflected the growing acceptance of the APC among residents and expressing confidence that the party would sustain its momentum ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The development has further heightened political activities in Ebonyi, with the APC celebrating its unprecedented sweep while opposition parties continue to challenge the credibility of the local government elections.
As political attention gradually shifts towards 2027, the controversy surrounding the Ebonyi council polls is expected to remain a major talking point among the state’s political stakeholders.
