The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has expressed deep concern over the prolonged delay in the disbursement of students' upkeep allowances under the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), warning that continued inaction could trigger nationwide peaceful protests by affected students.

In a statement issued by the President of NANS, Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, the student body said it had received numerous complaints from beneficiaries across the country regarding the non-payment of upkeep allowances for the past two months.

According to the association, the delay has created uncertainty and hardship for thousands of students who depend on the allowances to support their academic and living expenses amid the prevailing economic challenges in the country.

NANS described the situation as unacceptable, stressing that the primary objective of the NELFUND scheme is to provide financial relief and support to Nigerian students. The association noted that any delay in accessing the funds undermines the purpose of the initiative and negatively impacts students' welfare.

"The continued delay in the disbursement of these allowances is completely unacceptable. The essence of the NELFUND initiative is to ease the burden on Nigerian students, particularly in the face of current economic realities," the statement read.

The association called on the Managing Director of NELFUND, Mr. Akintunde Sawyerr, the Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, and the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr. Taiwo Oyedele, to urgently intervene and address all issues responsible for the delay.

NANS also demanded transparency from the relevant authorities, urging them to provide a clear explanation to students and immediately commence the payment of all outstanding upkeep allowances.

The student body further warned that failure to resolve the issue within the shortest possible time could compel Nigerian students to embark on peaceful mass action, including the occupation of the NELFUND headquarters, until decisive steps are taken to address their grievances.

While emphasizing that its position should not be interpreted as a threat, NANS said the warning reflects the growing frustration among students whose welfare has been adversely affected by the prolonged delay in payments.

The association reaffirmed its commitment to protecting the interests of Nigerian students and ensuring that their concerns receive the attention they deserve.

NANS urged all relevant stakeholders to act swiftly in order to prevent further tension and restore confidence in the government's student support initiative.
