The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has initiated a strategic partnership with the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS) aimed at improving access to justice, bail support, rehabilitation, and welfare services for Nigerian students held in correctional centres across the country.
The initiative, led by the NANS National President, Distinguished Comrade Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, is designed to strengthen institutional collaboration in protecting the rights and future of students who find themselves involved in legal proceedings.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the National Public Relations Officer of NANS, Comrade Obidah David, the engagement underscores the association's commitment to ensuring that students in correctional facilities are not denied access to justice or opportunities for rehabilitation and reintegration into society.
The association noted that access to bail remains a vital component of the justice system, particularly for students awaiting the determination of their cases. It argued that where legal conditions are met, timely bail can help prevent unnecessary disruption to students' education, preserve family ties, and safeguard their future while allowing due process to take its course.
During the meeting, officials of NANS and the Nigerian Correctional Service explored areas of collaboration, including support mechanisms for eligible student bail applications, legal guidance, and other initiatives aimed at improving the welfare and rehabilitation of students in custody.
Speaking on the development, NANS President Akinteye said student welfare extends beyond the classroom, stressing that every Nigerian student deserves fair treatment, access to justice, and institutional support regardless of their circumstances.
"Education remains a foundation for national development. Where students encounter legal challenges, every lawful opportunity that protects their rights, dignity, and ability to continue their educational journey must be encouraged," he said.
NANS also commended the leadership of the Nigerian Correctional Service for its willingness to collaborate and its commitment to promoting humane, reformative, and people-centred correctional administration.
The association reaffirmed its commitment to building strategic partnerships with government institutions, security agencies, and other stakeholders to advance student welfare, justice, safety, and a more inclusive educational system across Nigeria.
