The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Kwara State Command, says it handled more than 100 gender-related cases between January and June 2026, recording significant successes in tackling gender-based violence and protecting vulnerable persons across the state.

The State Commandant, Abbas Nda Mohammed, disclosed this during a media briefing at the Command Headquarters in Ilorin on Tuesday. He revealed that the Command secured a life imprisonment sentence against a convicted sexual offender during the period, describing the achievement as a testament to the Corps' commitment to ensuring justice for victims of sexual and gender-based violence.

According to the Commandant, the Gender Unit recorded 36 cases of domestic violence, with 12 currently undergoing mediation. The Command also handled 19 child custody disputes, resolving 15, while four cases remain pending.

He further stated that the Command received 38 cases of child abandonment, with six successfully resolved, while investigations and welfare interventions continue in the remaining cases.

Commandant Abbas also disclosed that nine abduction cases were reported within the six-month period, adding that four victims had been reunited with their families through the intervention of the Corps.

In addition, he said eight cases involving rape, sexual assault and child molestation are currently before competent courts for prosecution, stressing that the Command remains committed to ensuring offenders face the full weight of the law.

The Commandant commended officers of the Gender Unit for their professionalism and dedication, while urging residents to promptly report cases of domestic violence, child abuse, sexual offences and other forms of gender-based violence for immediate intervention.

He reaffirmed the NSCDC's commitment to safeguarding the rights and dignity of women, children and other vulnerable persons through effective investigations, collaboration with relevant stakeholders and strict enforcement of the law.
