The three-year ban imposed on Anambra student Mmesoma Ejikeme by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board is set to expire this July, making her eligible once again to register for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).
The sanction was imposed in July 2023 after Ejikeme was found to have falsified her UTME result, a development that generated widespread public attention and reignited discussions on academic integrity in Nigeria.
The controversy began when Ejikeme, then a student of Anglican Girls Secondary School, Nnewi, claimed she scored 362 in the 2023 UTME and had emerged as the country's highest-scoring candidate.
However, JAMB dismissed the claim, describing the result notification slip she presented as fake. The examination body stated that its records showed her authentic score was 249 and subsequently withdrew the result while imposing a three-year ban from all examinations conducted by the board.
The incident prompted the Anambra State Government to set up an independent investigative panel to determine the circumstances surrounding the disputed result.
The committee, made up of academic and information technology experts, concluded that Ejikeme altered her UTME score using her mobile phone. Following the findings, she admitted to manipulating the result and publicly apologised to JAMB, the Anambra State Government and Nigerians.
In addition to the examination ban, the state government directed that she undergo a three-month psychotherapy and counselling programme as part of her rehabilitation.
With the expiration of the sanction this month, Ejikeme is expected to regain full eligibility to create a new JAMB profile, register for the UTME and pursue admission into any Nigerian tertiary institution.
JAMB has maintained that its upgraded digital verification system is capable of detecting and preventing examination result manipulation, reaffirming its commitment to preserving the credibility of Nigeria's tertiary admission process.
