Fresh security measures ordered by the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) have reportedly triggered heightened police operations across Osun State, with alleged political thugs said to be going into hiding following directives aimed at tackling political violence ahead of the August 15 local government election.

According to security sources, the directives were conveyed by the Deputy Inspector-General of Police (DIG) during a meeting with the Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG), Zone 11, and the Osun State Commissioner of Police.

The reported directives include the immediate arrest of individuals allegedly involved in political violence, investigation and prosecution of suspects linked to recent killings, action on petitions against the head of the Police Anti-Cultism Unit, DCP Lukman, and an end to alleged partisan policing before and during the forthcoming polls.

Sources familiar with the development claimed that police formations across the state have since received operational signals directing officers to enforce the IGP's instructions.

"Things are changing. We have received several signals, and the directives are specific. We will soon begin arresting those responsible for the violence," a senior security source, who requested anonymity, said.

The Anti-Cultism Unit was also reportedly placed under scrutiny, with its commander allegedly facing investigation over claims of collusion with suspected political thug Asiri Eniba and members of his group. However, the Nigeria Police Force has not officially confirmed the investigation.

Eyewitnesses also claimed to have seen vehicles allegedly associated with the group leaving Osogbo towards the Gbongan-Ikire axis, suggesting that some suspected political thugs may be relocating from the state capital. These claims remain unverified.

Meanwhile, sources within the police command alleged that the Osun State Commissioner of Police has intensified internal meetings with senior officers to ensure immediate implementation of the IGP's directives.

According to the sources, the renewed activities followed mounting complaints over the handling of security issues in the state, although there has been no official confirmation that the commissioner is facing disciplinary action or redeployment.

As of the time of filing this report, claims that several locations allegedly used as operational bases by political thugs had been abandoned could not be independently verified.

The Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue an official statement addressing the allegations or confirming the reported operations.
