The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has recovered a double-barrel gun from the scene of a road traffic crash along the Awka–Enugu Expressway in Anambra State, highlighting the role of its rescue personnel in supporting national security.
According to a statement issued by the Corps Public Education Officer, Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri, the firearm was recovered on Friday, July 24, 2026, at about 2:30 p.m. during a routine inventory of victims' belongings after rescue operations had been completed.
The FRSC said the rescue patrol team discovered the gun concealed among luggage inside one of the crashed vehicles.
In line with the Corps' operational procedures, the officers immediately secured the weapon to prevent unauthorized access or misuse. As no individual claimed ownership of the firearm or presented valid documentation at the scene, it was handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation.
Reacting to the incident, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed commended the professionalism, vigilance, and integrity of the rescue team, describing the recovery as another example of the FRSC's contribution to internal security.
He noted that although the Corps' primary responsibility is to prevent road crashes, rescue victims, and ensure safer highways, its personnel often serve as first responders whose alertness has led to the recovery of stolen vehicles, dangerous weapons, and other security-related exhibits.
The Corps Marshal reaffirmed the FRSC's commitment to strengthening collaboration with other security agencies to enhance public safety, protect lives and property, and support national security efforts.
He also urged motorists and members of the public to remain law-abiding and promptly report any suspicious activities observed on the nation's highways.
The FRSC reiterated its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and inter-agency cooperation in carrying out its statutory responsibilities across the country.
