The Federal Government has announced plans to replace the iconic khaki uniform worn by members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) with locally produced Adire fabric as part of ongoing reforms aimed at promoting indigenous industries and strengthening Nigeria's economy.

The Minister of Youth Development, Ayodele Olawande, disclosed this on Thursday during an appearance on Channels Television's The Morning Brief.

According to the minister, the initiative is designed to encourage local production, revive Nigeria's textile industry, and ensure that government spending directly supports Nigerian manufacturers and artisans.

"It's Adire. So, Adire is being produced in Nigeria. We have them in Ogun, we have them in Kwara, we have textile industry. Let's put our money back into the country," Olawande said.

He explained that adopting Adire as the new NYSC uniform would create more opportunities for local textile producers while boosting patronage of made-in-Nigeria products.

The minister also announced plans to reform the NYSC posting system, stating that corps members would, going forward, be deployed based on their academic qualifications and professional competencies.

According to him, the proposed changes are intended to make the one-year national service more impactful by ensuring graduates contribute in sectors that align with their fields of study.

The reforms, if implemented, are expected to modernise the NYSC scheme, stimulate the local textile industry, create jobs, and enhance the effectiveness of national service across the country.
