The Federal Government has deployed a special team of Coastal Road Guards to protect the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway from vandalism and other illegal activities.
The initiative, launched by the Federal Ministry of Works, is aimed at safeguarding public infrastructure along the highway following repeated cases of theft and destruction of road facilities.
Speaking during the inauguration, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olufemi Dare, said the guards have been trained by the Nigeria Police Force and equipped with motorcycles, communication gadgets and other operational tools to carry out 24-hour surveillance.
According to him, the guards will patrol the highway, prevent vandalism, stop illegal parking, enforce traffic regulations, curb indiscriminate waste dumping, street trading, grazing and other activities capable of damaging the road infrastructure. Suspected offenders will be handed over to relevant security agencies for prosecution.
The deployment comes amid growing public attention on the multi-trillion-naira Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, with the Federal Government reiterating its commitment to protecting the project and ensuring its long-term sustainability.
Authorities expressed confidence that the security measure will help preserve the integrity of the highway while safeguarding the huge public investment committed to the project.
