A cultural celebration in Ipetumodu, the headquarters of Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State, reportedly turned tragic on Wednesday, 5th August, 2026, following a violent clash during the 10th day of the town's annual Egungun festival.
According to a statement circulated by the social media platform Ipetumodu Indigenes, the incident allegedly involved a group of individuals said to have come from Ode-Omu. The statement claimed the attackers were armed with machetes and other weapons, resulting in the death of one person and leaving several others injured.
The report described the incident as a major disruption to what has traditionally been a peaceful cultural festival that attracts thousands of visitors to Ipetumodu every year.
The community maintained that Ipetumodu has long been known for its hospitality and peaceful coexistence, noting that residents of neighbouring communities, including Ode-Omu, regularly visit the town for business and other activities without incident.
While condemning the violence, the statement stressed that the town would not tolerate acts of hooliganism regardless of where those responsible originated.
Community leaders also appealed to the traditional ruler and elders of Ode-Omu to encourage peace and restraint among their people to prevent further escalation of tensions.
The statement further called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, ensure the protection of lives and property, and bring anyone found culpable to justice.
As of the time of filing this report, the Osun State Police Command had not issued an official statement confirming the circumstances surrounding the incident, the reported casualty figures, or the identities of those involved.
Authorities are expected to investigate the incident to establish the facts surrounding the clash.
