ABUJA — The Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to completing all ongoing and strategic dam projects across the country, dismissing concerns that critical water infrastructure has been abandoned.  

​Speaking on the renewed infrastructure push, the Director of Dams and Reservoir Operations, Engr. Ali Ibrahim Dalla, emphasized that the administration is intensifying efforts to fast-track construction sites nationwide to bolster President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's food security and economic development agenda.  

​Driving Food Security and Multipurpose Benefits

​The government highlighted that completing these capital-intensive projects is central to scaling up dry-season irrigation farming, mitigating food inflation, and providing sustainable livelihoods for rural communities.

 

Key highlights of the federal roadmap include:

  • ​Advanced Project Milestones: Facilities such as the Mangu Dam in Plateau State have already reached between 88 and 90 percent completion, with steady progress recorded at other sites like the Ogbese and Farin Ruwa dams.  

 

  • ​Clean Energy Generation: Multipurpose facilities—including Ogbese and Farin Ruwa—are engineered to deliver dual benefits by providing potable water alongside approximately 20 megawatts of hydropower each upon completion.  

 

  • ​Rigorous Quality Control: The ministry assured that site consultants verify all execution certificates to ensure that public funds match physical milestones and that structures meet long-term engineering standards.  

Overcoming Implementation Hurdles

​Addressing factors that have historically delayed timelines, the government noted that complexities such as detailed geological re-assessments, community resettlement logistics, and funding adjustments are being proactively managed.  

​To bypass fiscal constraints, the Federal Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation is combining traditional budgetary allocations with alternative financing frameworks, including Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), Sukuk financing, and backing from international development partners.  

​The Federal Government maintained that with active contractors currently on-site and tighter supervision structures in place, these vital water assets will soon be operational to serve Nigerians for decades.
