Nigeria’s journalism community has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of veteran journalist and publisher of The Eagle Online, Dotun Oladipo, at the age of 56.


Oladipo, the Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Premium Eagle Media Limited, publishers of The Eagle Online, reportedly died on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after suddenly taking ill at his office in Lagos.


According to reports, the veteran journalist was in his usual state of health earlier in the day before he suddenly became ill at work. He reportedly drove himself to a hospital for medical attention but later died.


His death was announced by The Eagle Online in the early hours of Wednesday and subsequently confirmed by the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), an organisation he previously led as president.


The current GOCOP President, Danlami Nmodu, announced the development on the guild’s platform, describing Oladipo as its Emeritus President.


The General Secretary of the Innovative Media Partners Cooperative Multipurpose Society (IMPCMS), Nkanu Egbe, also confirmed the death, describing it as a devastating loss to the organisation and the Nigerian journalism profession. Oladipo was the founding president of the cooperative.


A Career Spanning Nearly Three Decades


Oladipo had a journalism career spanning nearly three decades. Before establishing The Eagle Online, he worked with several prominent Nigerian media organisations, including Nigerian Tribune, Nigerian Compass, The Sun and PUNCH Newspapers.


At PUNCH, he served as Politics Editor and was also a member of the newspaper’s editorial board. He later ventured into digital publishing, founding The Eagle Online and becoming one of the notable figures in Nigeria’s emerging online journalism industry.


He obtained a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication from Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta, in 1992.


Beyond publishing, Oladipo was actively involved in professional media organisations and was recognised by colleagues as a thorough journalist, newsroom professional and advocate for the growth of digital journalism in Nigeria.


Colleagues Mourn


News of Oladipo’s sudden death has generated widespread grief among journalists, publishers and associates across Nigeria.


Former Nigeria Union of Journalists and African Union of Journalists president Lanre Ogundipe described the late journalist as a committed professional whose career bridged traditional newsroom journalism and the digital media era.


African Action Congress presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore also paid tribute to Oladipo, describing him as a gentleman, accomplished digital journalist and remarkable human being.


Oladipo’s death represents a significant loss to Nigeria’s media industry, particularly the digital journalism sector, where he played a prominent role in its development.


The family and relevant professional organisations are expected to announce details of his funeral arrangements in due course.


Dotun Oladipo was 56. May his soul rest in peace.
