A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja has sentenced Muhammad Sani to 20 years imprisonment for concealing information about a notorious bandit and aiding activities linked to terrorism and banditry.

Sani, a resident of Nabi Village in Shiroro Local Government Area of Niger State, was convicted on two counts of terrorism-related offences following his prosecution by security authorities.

According to a statement issued by the Department of State Services (DSS), the convict was found guilty of conspiring with an alleged notorious bandit identified as Danranmi, who remains at large, to conceal information regarding the bandit's criminal activities.

The prosecution told the court that Danranmi was known for supplying arms and ammunition to kidnappers and bandits operating in parts of Niger State and its environs.

The court also heard that Sani received ₦580,000 to procure 150 rounds of ammunition for the fugitive bandit, thereby facilitating criminal operations linked to terrorism and insecurity.

Delivering judgment, Justice Emeka Nwite convicted Sani on Counts One and Two of a four-count charge and sentenced him to 20 years imprisonment without the option of a fine on each count.

The judge ordered that the sentence should take effect from January 11, 2023, the date of Sani's arrest, and directed that he serve his jail term at the Kuje Correctional Centre, Abuja.

The DSS described the conviction as part of ongoing efforts by security agencies to dismantle networks supporting banditry, kidnapping and terrorism across the country.

According to the agency, the prosecution demonstrates the government's resolve to hold accountable individuals who aid criminal groups by providing logistical support, financing, or withholding critical intelligence from security authorities.

The conviction comes amid intensified efforts by security agencies to combat terrorism, banditry and related crimes in various parts of Nigeria.
