The Nigerian Army has appealed to parents, guardians, traditional rulers and community leaders across the South-East to encourage more young people to enlist in the military, citing the region's persistent inability to meet its recruitment quota.

The appeal was made by the Waidi Shaibu during the passing-out parade of 2,989 regular recruits at the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda, Ebonyi State.

According to the Army Chief, the recruitment target allocated to the South-East has remained largely underutilised despite efforts to expand enlistment opportunities in the region.

"The recruitment quota from this zone has not been fully utilised. This should not continue," Shaibu said.

He explained that the establishment of the Nigerian Army Recruits Training Depot in Amasiri-Edda was aimed at increasing participation from the South-East and providing easier access for qualified youths seeking military careers.

Describing military service as a noble and patriotic profession, the Army Chief urged parents, guardians, community leaders and other stakeholders to motivate eligible young men and women to take advantage of the opportunity to serve the nation.

Addressing the newly graduated soldiers, Shaibu reminded them of the enormous responsibility that comes with military service, noting that Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including terrorism, insurgency, banditry, separatist violence, organised crime and cyber threats.

He charged the recruits to remain disciplined, professional and committed to protecting the country's territorial integrity.

The Chief of Army Staff also cautioned military personnel against violating the Army's social media policy, warning that the unauthorised sharing of operational information, military photographs, sensitive locations or unverified content online could attract disciplinary measures, including dismissal from service.

In his remarks, Francis Nwifuru reaffirmed the Ebonyi State Government's commitment to supporting the Nigerian Army.

The governor pledged to continue providing a peaceful and conducive environment for military training while strengthening collaboration between security agencies and host communities to enhance peace and national security.
