The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has reaffirmed that both the standard ₦100 banknote and the commemorative ₦100 banknote remain legal tender and must be accepted for all transactions across the country.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, the apex bank said it had received reports that some individuals, businesses, and other stakeholders were rejecting the standard ₦100 note due to uncertainty over its legal tender status.
The CBN clarified that the commemorative ₦100 banknote, introduced to mark Nigeria's centenary, did not replace the existing standard ₦100 note. According to the bank, both versions remain valid and are recognized as legal tender for all financial transactions nationwide.
The bank warned that refusing to accept the standard ₦100 note is a violation of the provisions of the CBN Act and could undermine public confidence in the nation's currency. It added that appropriate enforcement measures would be taken against any individual or organisation found rejecting the note without lawful justification.

Reiterating its commitment to maintaining the integrity of the naira, the CBN said it remains focused on ensuring confidence in all duly issued banknotes and promoting seamless currency circulation across Nigeria.
The apex bank urged members of the public, financial institutions, businesses, and other economic agents to accept and transact with all banknotes legally issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria.
For further clarification, the CBN advised Nigerians to contact the bank through its official communication channels.
