The Nigerian Senate has passed the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) Act (Amendment) Bill, 2026, proposing stiffer penalties for various traffic-related offences across the country.

Under the amended legislation, motorists who fail to obey traffic lights, road signs, pavement markings, or other road traffic regulations could face a fine of up to ₦100,000 upon conviction.

The bill also targets activities considered disruptive or unsafe within commercial vehicles. Individuals found hawking, trading, or preaching inside commercial buses may be liable to a ₦50,000 fine if convicted.

Lawmakers said the amendment is aimed at strengthening road safety enforcement, promoting compliance with traffic regulations, and reducing accidents caused by reckless road use and distractions.

The proposed penalties form part of broader efforts to improve orderliness on Nigerian roads and enhance the effectiveness of the Federal Road Safety Corps in carrying out its mandate.

The bill is expected to proceed through the remaining legislative processes before becoming law.
