A staff member of the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC) has died after being electrocuted while carrying out repair work on an electricity pole in Ado Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital.

The tragic incident occurred along the road opposite the Federal Polytechnic Satellite Campus, where the technician had reportedly climbed an active electricity pole to restore power following an outage in the area.

Eyewitnesses said the worker suddenly became weak and appeared to lose control while suspended on the pole, prompting residents to raise an alarm. A fellow BEDC official initially attempted to assist him before operatives of the Ekiti State Fire and Emergency Service arrived at the scene and safely brought him down.

The victim was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical treatment but was later confirmed dead by medical personnel.

The incident has sparked concerns over workplace safety in the power sector, with residents recalling that another electricity worker under the defunct Power Holding Company of Nigeria (PHCN) lost his life in a similar electrocution incident at the same location in 2012.

As of the time of filing this report, BEDC had yet to issue an official statement on the incident or disclose whether an investigation had been launched into the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.
