IKIRE, OSUN STATE — Tensions flared at a polling unit in Ikire, the headquarters of Irewole Local Government Area, after aggrieved voters staged a loud protest over the suspicious clustering of political party agents near voting cubicles.

Voters waiting in line expressed frustration after observing agents from opposing political parties gathering within close range of secret voting booths, allegedly peeking at ballot papers and attempting to influence electors as they marked their choices.

Allegations of Intimidation and Interference

The protest broke out when voters demanded that Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) presiding officers enforce official electoral guidelines, which mandate that party agents remain at a designated distance from secret voting compartments.

  • Voters' Stance: Protesting electors accused the agents of compromising secrecy of the ballot and attempting covert vote-buying schemes by confirming marked choices before ballots were cast.
  • Agitation at the Queue: The confrontation caused a temporary standoff at the voting center, with voters chanting and refusing to cast their ballots until electoral officials and security guards cleared the immediate area around the polling booth.

"The secret ballot is supposed to be private," one angry voter stated at the scene. "Having agents standing right over our shoulders destroys the integrity of the process. We will not vote until they move back to their assigned seats."

INEC Officials and Security Step In

To prevent the altercation from escalating into open clash, security personnel attached to the polling center—comprising officers from the Nigeria Police Force and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC)—intervened to restore order.

  • Re-establishing Security Lines: Security operatives created a clear barrier between the voting cubicles and party agents, warning that any further non-compliance would result in immediate ejection from the venue.
  • INEC Directive: Presiding officers reiterated INEC's strict stance against interference, instructing polling clerks to ensure the voting booth remained completely shielded from third-party view.

Resumption of Voting Under Close Scrutiny

Following the intervention, voting activities resumed under heightened watch by domestic election observers and community elders monitoring the process.

As electoral proceedings continue across Irewole LGA and neighboring areas, election monitoring organizations have called on INEC officials across all 30 local government areas to rigidly enforce voting privacy rules to ensure a credible and transparent outcome.
