Fresh controversy has erupted within the Osun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) following allegations that powerful interests within the party are attempting to overturn the outcome of the Oriade State Constituency House of Assembly primary election.
The allegations, made by a pressure group known as Oriade Advocates of Good Governance, have sparked concerns over internal democracy within the ruling opposition party in the state ahead of the 2026 general elections.
In a statement signed by its Secretary, Fayemi Oladimeji, the group accused certain APC leaders of plotting to replace Engr. Olufemi Akosile, whom it described as the duly elected winner of the direct primary election, with another aspirant.
According to the group, the primary election was conducted under the supervision of electoral and security officials, with results collated across the constituency and endorsed by party stakeholders.
The group alleged that despite the outcome of the exercise, efforts were underway to substitute Akosile's candidacy, a move it said could undermine the credibility of the party's primary process and fuel discontent among grassroots members.
Political observers say the development highlights growing tensions within the APC as various factions jostle for influence ahead of the elections.
The controversy comes amid broader concerns over candidate selection processes in some political parties, with critics arguing that the wishes of party members are sometimes sacrificed for elite political interests.
The group warned that any attempt to alter the outcome of the primary election could trigger legal battles and deepen divisions within the APC at a critical period when the party is expected to be consolidating its structures for the forthcoming polls.
It also referenced ongoing legal disputes arising from other APC primary elections in Osun State, suggesting that failure to address grievances could expose the party to further internal crises.
The allegations have provided fresh ammunition for opposition parties, which have repeatedly accused the APC of failing to uphold the democratic principles it advocates publicly.
As of press time, neither the Osun APC leadership nor those mentioned in the allegations had issued an official response.
Analysts believe the manner in which the party handles the dispute may significantly influence perceptions among voters in Oriade State Constituency and beyond as preparations for the 2026 elections gather momentum.
