The European Union Election Observer Mission has announced plans to monitor the forthcoming Osun State governorship election as part of its commitment to promoting democratic values and ensuring compliance with electoral standards.

The disclosure was made by the Austrian Ambassador to Nigeria, Peter Guschelbauer, during a courtesy visit to Governor Ademola Adeleke at the Government House in Osogbo over the weekend.

According to the ambassador, the European Union remains committed to supporting free, fair, and credible elections and is particularly interested in the conduct of the August 15 governorship poll, which is widely regarded as a precursor to Nigeria's 2027 general elections.

Guschelbauer noted that the EU expects the election to be conducted in strict compliance with Nigeria's electoral laws and democratic principles. He commended Governor Adeleke's administration for its governance efforts and urged all political stakeholders to adhere to the rule of law in the interest of peace, stability, and democratic development.

The ambassador also highlighted the longstanding cultural ties between Austria and Osun State, particularly through the globally recognised Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove. He expressed Austria's interest in strengthening cooperation with the state in areas such as cultural preservation, tourism, investment, and business partnerships.

According to the governor, the presence of international observers would help reinforce compliance with democratic standards and enhance public confidence in the electoral process.

"Our government remains committed to free and fair elections as well as creating an enabling environment for investors and development partners. Osun State offers immense opportunities in agriculture, renewable energy, education, technology, mining, and vocational development. We are ready to work with Austria and other international partners to explore these opportunities for mutual growth and prosperity," Adeleke said.

In a related development, a delegation from the British Embassy is expected to visit Osun State this week as part of pre-election engagements with key stakeholders ahead of the governorship election.

The planned visits by the British Embassy team and the anticipated European Union delegation come amid heightened political activities in the state as preparations intensify for the August 15 poll.

Meanwhile, the Osun State Government has taken a significant step toward sustainable transportation by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Apple HK Nigeria Limited for the deployment of electric vehicles within the state.

Governor Adeleke disclosed the development while unveiling the first batch of electric motorcycles under the Imole Electric Motorbikes Initiative, describing the partnership as a major milestone in Osun's drive toward environmentally sustainable and cost-effective transportation.

The governor commended the lead partner of Green Apple HK Nigeria Limited, Ibukun Demuren, for supporting the initiative, noting that the electric motorcycles would reduce transportation costs and promote cleaner energy alternatives.

He further revealed that the state government plans to expand the initiative beyond motorcycles to include electric tricycles, cars, and buses.

"Very soon, Osun will see tricycles running on electricity. You will see cars running on electricity. You will see buses running on electricity right here in Osun State. This is the future we are building — a future where residents spend less on fuel and have more resources available for their families and businesses," Gov. Adeleke stated.
