The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has deployed 10,000 personnel, including specialised tactical units and K9 teams, to ensure a peaceful, secure, and credible governorship election in Ekiti State.
The deployment, approved by the Commandant General of the Corps, is part of a comprehensive security strategy aimed at safeguarding voters, election officials, and critical electoral infrastructure before, during, and after the poll.
According to the NSCDC, the operation will involve regular officers, intelligence operatives, undercover agents, armed squads, and specially trained K9 units strategically positioned across the state to prevent electoral violence and other security threats.
The Corps said personnel have been directed to maintain professionalism and neutrality while ensuring strict compliance with electoral laws and regulations.
Security operatives are expected to provide protection at polling units, collation centres, and other sensitive locations, while surveillance teams will monitor identified flashpoints to forestall any breakdown of law and order.
The NSCDC also disclosed that intelligence gathering and coordinated patrols would be intensified in collaboration with other security agencies to guarantee a hitch-free electoral process.
Speaking on the deployment, the Corps reiterated its commitment to protecting lives and property and ensuring that eligible voters exercise their franchise without fear of intimidation, harassment, or violence.
The agency warned political actors and their supporters against engaging in activities capable of disrupting the electoral process, stressing that anyone found violating electoral laws would be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Residents and voters were urged to remain peaceful, vigilant, and cooperate with security agencies by reporting suspicious movements and activities within their communities.
The massive deployment underscores the determination of security agencies to maintain peace and public confidence in the conduct of the Ekiti governorship election.
Election observers have noted that adequate security remains a critical factor in ensuring a free, fair, and credible democratic process, particularly during highly contested elections.
