The All Progressives Congress (APC) has secured a comprehensive victory in the Edo State Local Government elections held on Saturday, July 11, 2026, winning all 18 chairmanship seats across the state.
The election, conducted by the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC), witnessed voting across the state's 192 wards. Early results from various collation centres showed the APC maintaining a strong lead throughout the exercise, culminating in a clean sweep of all local government council chairmanship positions.
One of the most notable victories came from Ovia South West Local Government Area, where 30-year-old APC candidate Anthony Osarobo emerged victorious. Returning Officer Dr. Arodoye Nosakhare declared Osarobo winner after he polled 98,994 votes, defeating 11 other candidates in the contest.
Governor Monday Okpebholo, who cast his vote at Ward 2, Udomi Primary School in Esan Central Local Government Area, commended the conduct of the election. He described the process as peaceful and praised the turnout of voters across various parts of the state.
According to the governor, reports from the field indicated that the election proceeded smoothly without major incidents.
Despite the APC's victory, the election was overshadowed by the boycott of the exercise by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The opposition party had earlier withdrawn from the polls, with its state chairman, Tony Aziegbemi, describing the election as illegitimate and protesting the dissolution of previous local government administrations.
Reports from some urban centres, including Oredo and Egor Local Government Areas, indicated voter apathy and delays in the distribution of election materials. However, electoral officials continued with the exercise as scheduled.
To maintain law and order, the Edo State Police Command imposed a restriction on human and vehicular movement from midnight on Friday until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. Security personnel were deployed across the state, including polling units and border entry points, to ensure a peaceful electoral process.
The election concluded without major security breaches, with security agencies maintaining a visible presence throughout the exercise.
The APC's victory grants the party full control of all 18 local government councils in Edo State, further strengthening its political influence at the grassroots level and consolidating its position within the state's governance structure.
