OSOGBO — The Osun State chapter of the Accord has raised a serious alarm over an alleged clandestine plot by the All Progressives Congress (APC) in active collaboration with a faction of the State Police Command to compromise the integrity of the upcoming electoral process.
According to a statement issued by the State Chairman of Accord, Pastor Victor Akande, the opposition party uncovered a directive hatched during an APC stakeholders' meeting in Osogbo. The alleged plot mandates Divisional Police Officers (DPOs), acting through the Commissioner of Police, to secure exclusive accommodations for local electoral officers across the state's local government areas.
A Safe Haven for Rigging?
The Accord party alleged that the primary objective behind securing these accommodations is to cordon them off as "safe havens" for writing election results away from designated polling units, which would subsequently be declared as official figures.
"We view with grave concern this sinister plot and we call on the Independent National Electoral Commission to reject any attempt to rope its officials into garrison accommodation for election rigging," the statement read. "Osun people reject any attempt to write election results from barricaded hotel rooms under police illegal operations."
Escalating Concerns Over Police Partisanship
The party heavily criticized the Osun State Police Command, accusing it of graduating from partisan harassment—such as allegedly accompanying political thugs to hijack motor parks and arresting opposition figures—to direct interference in core electoral administration.
Pastor Akande emphasized that law enforcement agencies have no constitutional mandate or business providing or regulating accommodations for electoral officers.
Call to Action for INEC and National Stakeholders
With the crucial August 15 election fast approaching and drawing intense national and international scrutiny as a benchmark for the 2027 general elections, Accord is demanding immediate preventive measures:
- Direct Circular from INEC: The national and state leadership of the electoral commission has been urged to issue an unequivocal circular distancing itself from the arrangement.
- Protection of the Vote: The party insists that Osun voters must be allowed to freely and fairly choose their leaders without intimidation or backroom manipulation.
As pressure mounts on security and electoral authorities, stakeholders maintain that the handling of security and administrative neutrality in Osun will serve as a definitive test case for Nigeria's democratic future.
