The Osun State House of Assembly has approved the proposed constitutional amendment seeking to provide a legal framework for the establishment of State Police Services in Nigeria.

The decision was taken during the Assembly’s plenary on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, presided over by the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Adewale Egbedun.

The proceedings began with the opening prayer and recitation of the National and Osun State Anthems, after which lawmakers approved the proceedings of Monday, September 21.

State Police Bill

The Speaker informed the House of a letter from the Clerk of the National Assembly transmitting the Sixth Alteration Bill, which seeks to create a constitutional pathway for the establishment of State Police Services.

The bill was subsequently listed for deliberation. The Speaker opened the floor for contributions from lawmakers, who expressed broad support for the proposed constitutional amendment.

Following the debate, a motion for the Osun State House of Assembly to approve the proposed constitutional amendment for the establishment of State Police Services was moved by Hon. Kofoworola Babajide Adewumi and seconded by Hon. Tajudeen Adeyemi.

The approval adds Osun to the state assemblies considering the proposed constitutional changes aimed at providing a constitutional framework for state-controlled police services.

Osun Park Management Bill

The Assembly also continued consideration of the Osun State Park Management System Bill, 2026 under the Committee of the Whole.

Hon. Kofoworola Babajide Adewumi moved a motion for the House to dissolve into the Committee of the Whole for further consideration of the bill. The motion was seconded by Hon. Sanmi Areoye.

Following deliberations in the Committee of the Whole, Hon. Kofoworola Babajide Adewumi moved that the progress made during the committee session be reported to the House. The motion was seconded by Hon. Sikiru Bajepade.

The House subsequently returned to plenary, where the Speaker reported the progress made during the Committee of the Whole.

A motion that the progress made form part of the bill was then moved by Hon. Kofoworola Babajide Adewumi and seconded by Hon. Taofiq Olayiwola.

Meanwhile, the Speaker announced the presence of elected councillors from Ife North Local Government Area, who attended the plenary as observers.

There were no communications from the Governor, petitions, matters of urgent public importance or personal explanations during the sitting.

The House thereafter adjourned plenary to Wednesday, September 23, 2026, following a motion moved by Hon. Kofoworola Babajide Adewumi and seconded by Hon. Kashope Abolarin.
