As political tensions reach a fever pitch ahead of the August 15 governorship election, Governor Ademola Adeleke has summoned an emergency security council meeting to address what he described as a coordinated wave of thuggery and vandalism across Osun State.
The meeting, held at the Governor’s Office in Osogbo on Sunday, May 10, 2026, brought together all heads of security agencies in the state. The Governor expressed deep concern over recent reports of suspected hoodlums attacking public structures and destroying promotional materials.
“I summon this emergency meeting to address this matter of urgent public importance. We must question why hoodlums attack public properties while law enforcement agents refuse to make arrests or prevent such threats to public peace.” — Governor Ademola Adeleke.
A STATE UNDER PRESSURE
The surge in violence follows a week of heated accusations between the ruling Accord Party (supporting Adeleke's re-election) and the All Progressives Congress (APC).
While the Imole Campaign Council accused notorious thugs of destroying Adeleke’s billboards under the watch of compromised security operatives, the APC has countered, alleging that their own candidate, Asiwaju Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji (AMBO), has been the true victim of state-sponsored harassment.
Governor Adeleke has directed his Special Adviser on Security to ensure that security agencies remain neutral and proactive, warning that the "deliberate provocation" aims to create conditions for a state of emergency.
THE MANDATE FOR SECURITY FORCES
The Governor has issued three specific mandates to the security council:
-
Containment Strategy: Immediate mobilization to prevent future attacks on strategic government buildings and campaign sites.
-
Accountability: Investigation into why arrests have not been made during recent open acts of vandalism.
-
Neutrality: Ensuring that security personnel do not "look away" while criminal acts are committed by political actors.
