BENIN CITY — Over 68 passengers narrowly escaped disaster on Thursday after an aircraft operating under Enugu Air crash-landed and overshot the runway at the Benin Airport in Edo State.
The flight, identified by registration number 5N-ENR, was traveling along the Enugu–Benin–Lagos route when the incident occurred under wet weather conditions. According to preliminary reports, the aircraft veered off the tarmac and plowed into a nearby muddy embankment off the runway.

A source at the Benin Airport, speaking anonymously, confirmed that emergency teams from the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) responded immediately to the scene. Ground crews and safety personnel deployed quickly to secure the perimeter and successfully evacuate all passengers from the aircraft without any reported fatalities.
"FAAN officials reacted promptly to the incident, ensuring all passengers were safely evacuated from the aircraft," the airport source stated.
Ongoing Investigations
Aviation authorities are expected to launch a formal investigation into the immediate cause of the runway excursion, looking into factors such as visibility, weather conditions at the time of landing, and mechanical parameters. Further updates from aviation regulators are anticipated as investigations proceed
