The Federal Government has raised a N500 billion Emergency Security Intervention Fund as part of efforts to strengthen the country's response to banditry, insurgency, kidnapping, and other security challenges.
The fund was sourced through deductions from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) revenue for May 2026 before the monthly allocation was distributed among the Federal Government, state governments, and local government councils.
Officials familiar with the development disclosed that the deduction was made upfront during the FAAC revenue-sharing process. According to one of the sources, the security intervention fund accounted for a significant portion of the difference between the total revenue generated and the amount eventually shared among the three tiers of government.
Documents presented at the FAAC meeting revealed that, in addition to the N500 billion Emergency Security Intervention Fund, another N250 billion was earmarked for a Military Intervention Fund. A further N252 billion was allocated to an Infrastructure Development Fund for states, while N450 billion was transferred to the Non-Oil Excess Revenue Account.
The combined deductions from the federation revenue amounted to approximately N952 billion.
Following the deductions and other statutory adjustments, the total distributable revenue for May 2026 stood at N2.3 trillion.
Breakdown of the allocation showed that the Federal Government received N818.68 billion, while the 36 states shared N759.14 billion. The 774 local government councils received N534.28 billion, while oil-producing states got N188.13 billion as 13 percent derivation revenue.
The latest intervention comes against the backdrop of persistent security concerns across various parts of the country. Nigeria continues to grapple with bandit attacks, insurgency in the North-East, kidnapping-for-ransom, communal conflicts, and resource-related violence.
In recent years, the Federal Government has increased funding for security agencies, procured military hardware, and expanded intelligence-gathering operations aimed at curbing insecurity and restoring public confidence.
Analysts say the creation of the emergency security fund underscores the government's determination to address evolving security threats, though they stress that transparency, accountability, and effective deployment of resources will be crucial to achieving the desired outcomes.
The government is yet to provide further details on the implementation framework and specific projects to be financed through the newly created security intervention fund.
