SASKATCHEWAN, CANADA — Nigerian-born legal scholar, Dr. Ibironke Odumosu-Ayanu, has been appointed Dean of the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan, Canada, in a major academic achievement for the Nigerian professor.

Odumosu-Ayanu will assume the position for a five-year term beginning October 1, 2026, succeeding Professor Martin Phillipson, who served two five-year terms as dean.

The University of Saskatchewan announced her appointment on September 1, describing the Nigerian-born professor as an internationally recognised scholar whose work spans business and human rights.

Patti McDougall, the university’s interim provost and vice-president, academic, as well as chair of the search committee, said Odumosu-Ayanu’s appointment reflects her record of academic excellence, collaborative leadership and commitment to research and graduate education.

McDougall added that the new dean would build on the College of Law’s reputation in legal education and research while strengthening its contribution to Indigenous legal scholarship and engagement with communities in Canada and beyond.

From Lagos to Canada

Odumosu-Ayanu's academic journey began in Lagos, Nigeria, where she grew up and developed an early interest in reading and writing.

She later studied law at the University of Lagos, earning her Bachelor of Laws degree before moving to Canada for further studies.

She obtained a master's degree from the University of Calgary, where she pursued her interest in natural resources, energy and environmental law. She subsequently earned a PhD from the University of British Columbia.

Although she initially planned to return to Nigeria after completing her master's degree and work as a lawyer, her academic career eventually took a different direction.

In 2008, she joined the College of Law at the University of Saskatchewan, where she has since served in several academic and leadership capacities.

She currently serves as Associate Dean of Research and Graduate Studies, a role that has placed her at the centre of research and postgraduate education at the institution.

Internationally Recognised Scholar

Odumosu-Ayanu has built an academic reputation around areas including business and human rights, while also contributing to legal research, teaching and graduate supervision.

Her appointment as dean places her among the senior academic leaders responsible for shaping the direction of one of Canada's established law colleges.

The University of Saskatchewan said her leadership would help strengthen the college's research profile and its engagement with Indigenous legal scholarship and both local and global communities.

For a scholar whose educational journey began in Lagos, the appointment represents a significant milestone and highlights the growing international impact of Nigerian academics across different fields.

Odumosu-Ayanu is expected to formally begin her new responsibilities on October 1, 2026, when she takes over leadership of the University of Saskatchewan's College of Law.
