ANAMBRA — Shock and grief have engulfed the academic community of Tansian University, Umunya, Anambra State, following the sudden death of its newly inaugurated Vice-Chancellor, Professor Carter Dike Umeoduagu.
Professor Umeoduagu, a 44-year-old Professor of Microbiology, was formally inaugurated as the substantive Vice-Chancellor of the university on October 2, 2026.
His appointment and inauguration were reportedly celebrated by members of his family, friends, colleagues and associates.
However, tragedy struck shortly after he assumed office, as the university don reportedly took ill and died on October 3, 2026 — barely 24 hours after his inauguration.
The deceased academic was also a former member of the Anambra State House of Assembly, where he represented Aguata 1 Constituency.
His death has reportedly sent shockwaves through the university community and political circles in the state, particularly given the timing of the incident.
Professor Umeoduagu assumed leadership of the institution amid a prolonged crisis that had affected the university.
