U.S. President Donald Trump has promised to issue a $5,000 “Trump Dividend” to every American adult if Republicans retain control of both chambers of Congress in the November 2026 midterm elections.

Trump made the pledge on Wednesday during the Republican Party’s midterm convention in Dallas, Texas, as he sought to rally support for Republican candidates ahead of the elections.

“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them … I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said.

He added that the proposed payment would have one major condition: the money must be spent within the United States.

Trump described the proposed payment as the “Trump Dividend,” presenting it as a benefit arising from what he characterised as the country’s economic strength and success.

However, details on how the proposed payments would be funded and implemented remain unclear. The Associated Press reported that the programme could cost more than $1 trillion and would require approval from Congress.

Vice President JD Vance appeared to qualify Trump’s announcement shortly afterwards, suggesting that wealthy Americans may not be eligible for the payment.

The proposal has already generated debate among economists and political observers, particularly over its potential impact on the federal deficit and inflation. The United States is currently running a substantial annual budget deficit, raising questions about the feasibility of financing such a large-scale payment.

Trump’s announcement comes as Republicans prepare for a closely watched midterm election in which control of Congress will be at stake.

The proposed dividend is therefore expected to become part of the broader political debate over the economy, government spending and the direction of the United States ahead of the November polls.
