A female TikTok content creator, Wasilat Olalere, has undergone traditional cleansing rites after allegedly recording restricted aspects of the annual Oloolu Masquerade Festival in Ibadan, Oyo State.

The incident, which has generated widespread reactions on social media, occurred during the revered cultural festival when the content creator was accused of filming activities considered sacred by the custodians of the Oloolu tradition.

According to officials of the Oloolu family, the cleansing exercise was conducted in line with long-standing traditional customs to atone for what they described as a violation of the festival's sacred protocols. The family secretary, Oluwo Ishola Akeem, explained that the rites were necessary to preserve the sanctity of the cultural heritage and uphold established traditions.

However, Olalere has denied filming the revered Oloolu masquerade. Speaking on the controversy, she maintained that she only mistakenly captured Alawo Oloolu, a figure associated with the festival, and not the sacred masquerade itself. She also dismissed rumours circulating online that she had died following the incident.

The spokesperson to the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Chief Adeola Oloko, corroborated her claim, clarifying that the TikToker did not record the sacred Oloolu masquerade but rather filmed Alawo Oloolu, an act that nonetheless prompted the traditional response from festival custodians.

The incident has sparked public debate over the intersection of cultural preservation and digital freedom, with opinions divided between those advocating respect for traditional practices and others calling for greater protection of individual rights in the era of social media.
