The Osun State Police Command has commenced a full-scale investigation into a shooting incident in Osogbo that claimed the life of a 60-year-old man, Tajudeen Yusuf, of the Oke-Ayepe area of the city.


According to a statement issued on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the incident occurred at about 4:00 p.m. at Itaolokan area of Osogbo.


The police said Yusuf was allegedly shot by suspected hoodlums shortly after a confrontation involving members of a gang and the security team attached to Governor Ademola Adeleke’s nephew, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido.


The incident reportedly followed a courtesy visit by Governor Adeleke and Davido to the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, Oba Jimoh Olanipekun.


The police alleged that shortly after the visit, an ex-convict identified as Adebayo Taoreed, popularly known as “Small Rugged”, allegedly attempted to gain access to Davido but was resisted by members of his security team.


According to the Command, the confrontation attracted other suspected gang members, who temporarily blocked the palace entrance and obstructed the movement of the convoy. The convoy eventually left the area safely.


The suspected gang members were said to have subsequently left the vicinity and allegedly shot Yusuf at Itaolokan.


Police operatives who responded to the scene reportedly found the victim lying in a pool of blood and immediately rushed him to the University Teaching Hospital, Osogbo. He was, however, pronounced dead by doctors on duty.


The Commissioner of Police (Election), Osun State Command, CP Samuel Etaifo, condemned the incident and assured residents that the Command would deploy all available resources to identify and apprehend those responsible.


The police urged members of the public with useful information about the incident or the whereabouts of the suspects to contact the nearest police station or the Command through its official channels.


The Command also appealed for calm and advised residents against taking the law into their own hands, assuring the public that further updates would be provided as the investigation progresses.
