OSOGBO, Osun State — The Osun State Police Command has arrested four suspects in connection with the August 24, 2026 attack in Ikire, where two passers-by were killed and three police officers sustained gunshot injuries.


The Commissioner of Police, Osun State Command, CP Ibrahim Umar Zungura, disclosed this on Thursday, August 27, during a press briefing in Osogbo.


According to the police, the incident occurred around the Naira & Kobo area of Ikire after the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Ikire, and his men responded to a distress call involving a group of armed hoodlums.


The Command said about 30 armed hoodlums descended on the responding police officers and allegedly snatched an AK-47 rifle from one of the policemen.


The police identified one of the suspected attackers, popularly known as Ayewo, as the person who allegedly used the snatched rifle to shoot sporadically, hitting three police officers and two passers-by.

The two passers-by later died from injuries sustained during the attack, while the injured police officers were taken to hospital for treatment. The assailants also reportedly fled with the stolen police rifle.


The police said that, following credible intelligence and technical analysis of information gathered in connection with the incident, its operatives arrested four suspects on Wednesday, August 26.


The suspects were identified as Sikiru Ademola Adedeji, 21; Olalere Taiwo, 21; Olalere Ademola, 26; and Bankole Abiodun, 20.


One cutlass-like object was reportedly recovered from the suspects.


CP Zungura said preliminary interrogation indicated that the suspects confessed to being political thugs and identified Ayewo, whose other name is unknown, as the head of their faction.


The Commissioner said the suspects also allegedly disclosed that Ayewo was responsible for firing the snatched AK-47 rifle during the incident.


The police said investigation remains ongoing, with efforts underway to arrest Ayewo and other suspects still at large.


Zungura commended the operatives who handled the investigation, praising their professionalism, dedication and use of intelligence and technical capabilities in tracking down the suspects.


He assured residents that everyone found to have participated in or contributed to the attack would be brought to justice.


The Commissioner also appealed to members of the public to provide the police with credible and timely information that could help prevent crime and facilitate the arrest of criminal suspects.


He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to protecting lives and property and maintaining peace and security across Osun State.
