The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has ordered the nationwide recall of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and PET or plastic bottles below 200ml, warning manufacturers and distributors of regulatory sanctions for non-compliance.


The agency directed affected manufacturers, distributors, retailers and other stakeholders to withdraw the prohibited products from warehouses, distribution outlets and other points within the supply chain. NAFDAC said companies that fail to comply could face enforcement measures, including the closure of their facilities.


According to the agency, the directive is part of the Federal Government’s ban on the production, importation, distribution, sale and use of alcoholic beverages packaged in sachets and small PET or plastic bottles. The ban, which took effect on January 1, 2026, followed years of consultations and extensions granted to industry stakeholders to enable them to adjust their production lines.


NAFDAC Director-General, Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, said recalled products would be inventoried and destroyed under the agency’s supervision, with manufacturers responsible for the cost of destruction. She further warned that facilities found producing the prohibited alcoholic beverages could remain sealed until their production lines are dismantled, permanently disabled or reconfigured.


The agency said the enforcement is aimed at reducing underage drinking, alcohol abuse and the easy availability of highly concentrated alcoholic beverages, particularly among young people.


NAFDAC also disclosed that recent enforcement operations uncovered continued production and distribution of some of the banned products, resulting in the closure of facilities and arrests of individuals allegedly involved in the violations.


The agency urged manufacturers and other players in the alcohol industry to comply fully with the directive, warning that further violations would attract appropriate regulatory action.
