Former Governor of Kogi State, Alhaji Ibrahim Idris, has died in the United Kingdom at the age of 77.

Idris, popularly known as “Ibro,” reportedly died on Sunday, September 20, 2026. His death was confirmed by his nephew, Shehu Ahmed, who disclosed the development to AIT Live.

The former governor, who was born in 1949 in Idah, Kogi State, served as governor from May 2003 to January 2012.

He was elected governor on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in 2003, defeating the incumbent governor, Prince Abubakar Audu. He was re-elected in 2007, although the election was later annulled by the court. Idris subsequently won the fresh election conducted in March 2008.

During his administration, his government embarked on several infrastructure and public-sector projects across the state, including road construction, housing, water supply, education and healthcare initiatives.

Idris left office in January 2012 and was succeeded by Captain Idris Wada.

Following his death, the Kogi State Government declared three days of mourning in his honour and directed that the Nigerian and Kogi State flags be flown at half-mast.

Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo also announced that the former governor would receive a state burial, with the state government taking responsibility for the arrangements and expenses.

The family is expected to announce further details concerning the burial after his remains are brought back to Nigeria in accordance with Islamic rites.
