Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Christopher Musa, has said every Nigerian should experience military training to better understand the discipline, endurance and sacrifices involved in military service.

Musa made the remarks while speaking about the difficult conditions Nigerian soldiers face in the course of protecting the country. His comments were reported on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

According to the minister, military training exposes people to conditions that test their ability to endure hunger, exhaustion and prolonged periods without sleep. He said such experiences could help Nigerians appreciate what soldiers go through while carrying out security operations.

> “Every Nigerian should undergo military training to understand what it means to stay hungry and learn what endurance means,” Musa said.

He explained that soldiers are sometimes required to continue moving for several kilometres despite fatigue and other physical challenges.

Musa highlights soldiers’ sacrifices

The Defence Minister also called attention to the personal sacrifices made by members of the armed forces, noting that soldiers deployed for security operations are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and members of families who leave their loved ones behind.

He said military personnel continue to operate under difficult conditions, including during the day and at night, in rain and dust, while carrying out their responsibilities.

Musa urged Nigerians to recognise these sacrifices, saying soldiers deserve commendation for their efforts to protect the country.

He also said military personnel, like other Nigerians, want an end to insecurity and a return to peace across the country.

The minister’s comments come amid ongoing discussions about the role of citizens and the armed forces in addressing Nigeria’s security challenges.
