Bangladesh's President, Mohammed Shahabuddin, has resigned from office after citing worsening physical and mental health, ending his tenure amid the country's ongoing political transition.

The 76-year-old leader submitted his resignation on Friday, July 24, 2026, stating that his declining health had made it impossible for him to continue carrying out the constitutional duties of his office. Shahabuddin disclosed that he suffers from multiple medical conditions, including heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, kidney complications, and Autonomic Neuropathy.

His resignation comes less than two years after the 2024 student-led uprising, which led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and reshaped Bangladesh's political landscape. Shahabuddin, who was widely regarded as an ally of Hasina and the Awami League, had faced increasing political pressure in recent months.

Under Bangladesh's Constitution, the office of the president will be filled within 90 days, with the Speaker of Parliament expected to oversee the transition until a new president is elected.

The development marks another significant chapter in Bangladesh's post-uprising political journey as the country continues efforts to stabilize its democratic institutions and navigate an uncertain political future.
