ABUJA — Some aggrieved governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have reportedly opened discussions with former Vice President and African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, amid growing tensions surrounding the activities of the coalition promoted by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.

The reported consultations are being considered by some governors as a possible counterweight to Wike’s political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A promoter of the Tinubu Continuity Project and APC member, Yusuf Musa, said some of the governors were exploring alternative political relationships because of concerns over the impact of the coalition on their political structures and interests.

Musa said the governors were not afraid that President Bola Tinubu could lose his re-election bid, but were concerned about the potential impact of the coalition on their political fortunes at the state level.

According to him, the governors’ concerns are linked to claims surrounding the coalition’s alleged plans to influence governorship and legislative elections in several states.

The development comes amid reported disagreements between some APC governors and Wike over political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

There are also concerns among some APC governors that politicians aligned with the emerging coalition could support candidates against APC-backed aspirants in governorship contests while simultaneously backing President Tinubu at the presidential level.

Wike has previously denied claims that President Tinubu ceded nine states to the coalition, while maintaining that the President is aware of the coalition’s activities and objectives.

The reported contacts with Atiku come amid wider political realignments ahead of the 2027 elections, with politicians across party lines exploring possible alliances and new political arrangements.
